He had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for the last 5 months, so we have praying for him to released to heaven, where he wouldn't have to be in any more pain that he could be reunited with his wife. He had been living in a rest home in West Haven since September and has deteriorated in the past couple of months.
He was one of the kindest people I have ever met in my entire life. He was always helpful and nice to anyone. He was also a POW for 3 years , 5 months, and 21 days in the Phillipines during World War II. He was a survivor of the Bataan Death March.
It is very sad to see him go, but it feels comforting that he doesn't have suffer with illness anymore and is reunited with his wife, friends, and family in Heaven. I know somewhere he is smiling.
Today, we went to the funeral. Ryan said the invocation. Dad, Uncle Jerry, and Aunt Janet spoke. All of us grandchildren sang "Love at Home." My cousin Will gave the benediction. Then we went up to Ogden to the grave, where Dad gave the dedicatory prayer and the military gave Uncle Jerry the flag that was over the casket. Afterwards, we had a luncheon at Grandpa's church. I had to leave early to get to my math class.
The Day God Called You Home
by Anonymous
God looked around his garden
and found an empty place,
he then looked down upon this earth,
and saw your loving face.
He put his arms around you
and lifted you to rest,
His garden must be beautiful,
he only takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering,
He knew you were in pain
and he knew that you would
never get well on earth again.
He saw your path was difficult,
he closed your tired eyes,
he wispered to you "peace be thine"
and gave you wings to fly,
when we saw you sleeping,
so calm and free of pain,
we would not wish you back on earth,
to suffer once again.
You left us precious memories,
your love will be our guide
you live on through Connor,
you're always by our side.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
but you did not go alone,
for part of us went with you,
The day god took you home.
